Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences of the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), we would like to invite you to participate in the Conference held on the occasion of 300th Anniversary of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The first historical attempt to promote advanced technical education in the Czech lands was made by Christian Joseph Willenberg in 1705. He received support from the emperor Joseph the Ist in 1707, and the first lectures were held in 1718. At first the studies were directed toward the construction of fortifications. The school of engineering remained open even during the wars that ravaged central Europe in the 18th century. After Willenberg, the baton passed to Prof. Jan Ferdinand Schor, a painter and the author of proposals to improve the navigability of the Vltava river, and to the mathematician and surveyor František Antonín Leonard Herget.

In the early 19th, century the studies were thoroughly reorganized by František Josef Gerstner, a professor of mathematics and mechanics, who directed the construction of a horse-drawn railway from České Budějovice to Linz. The Prague Polytechnic, the first institution of its type in central Europe, was opened in 1806. Until 1815, the new institute was called Polytechnic lnstitute of the Estates.

The aim of the Conference and related social events is to use this unique opportunity to get together professionals, as well as experts from other universities and research institutes to participate in relevant discussions, establish closer relationships with our faculty, and create favourable conditions for further cooperation in the field of transportation and telecommunications. We are convinced the atmosphere at the forthcoming Prague Conference will be friendly and creative. We shall be honoured by your acceptance of our invitation, and will be delighted to welcome you at the Conference and other festive activities.

We are looking forward to meet you in Prague. Sincerely,

Prof. Petr Moos        Assoc. Prof. Bohumil Kubát
